Optica Technologies adds FICON®/ESCON® (F/E) to its’ Premier Series of Protocol Converter Solutions

October 24, 2004

BOULDER, CO October 28, 2004 – - Optica Technologies Incorporated (Optica), a leading provider of enterprise connectivity and infrastructure solutions, today announced that is has released its’ Prizm Protocol Converter appliance, the second in a series of protocol conversion products for the IBM and plug-compatible market.

Prizm accepts a native FICON channel from the mainframe (CHPID type FC) and converts the protocol for connectivity to multiple outbound ESCON channels. ESCON devices are logically mapped to the FICON channel via a user-accessible configuration table. The initial release of Prizm F/E will support attachment of ESCON tape devices, with subsequent releases supporting additional peripheral types.

“Deployment of Prizm F/E preserves the user’s significant investment in ESCON devices, while enabling them to take advantage of the benefits of migrating to a FICON infrastructure on the host,” said Sean Seitz, VP of Business Development for Optica Technologies. “The Prizm FICON to ESCON converter appliance is an exciting option that eases the migration process in many respects and provides a great deal of flexibility to the user.”

Key advantages for attaching ESCON tape to the FICON network include: ESCON channel and director port consolidation, more efficient utilization of the FICON channel and tape resources, and the ability to support remote tape applications based on the inherent distance capability of the FICON protocol.

Initial installations are scheduled in Q1, 2005, with general availability shipments beginning in Q2, 2005.
